Bright Supernovae - 2002

This data comes from IAU Circulars and occasionally more data will be provided on IAU's Astronomical Headlines page. An archive of the 2002 updates to this page is available. This is a list of the SN discovered in 2002. For supernovae that are still visible, please look at the main page. For more information, you can look at the following Supernova Catalogs:

  • IAU List of Supernovae since 1885

2002 has turned out to be an interesting year.  First 2002ap, a rare Hypernova in a Messier galaxy!  It didn't get as bright as expected (only Mag 12.3, and not 10.0 as originally predicted), but it put on a good show until going into solar conjunction.  Next we had a supprise with 2002ao which dropped from a nice bright mag 13 to mag 16 in 3 days.  A very dramatic drop for a supernova.

For the year 2002, 334 supernovae were reported (307 last year) a new record.   64 in NGC and IC galaxies (63 last year), 122 got brighter than 18th Mag (94 last year).  9 extragalactic novae were also reported.   The brightest supernova reported for the year was 2002ap at mag 12.3 followed by 2002ao at mag 13.1, and 2002fk at mag 13.2.
